Mutual understanding of type certification systems and initial airworthiness regulation applicable in different regions is an important stepping stone for future cooperation. Kick-starting exchanges in the airworthiness domain between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) under the EU-ROK Aviation Partnership Project (APP), EASA and MOLIT organised an online workshop introducing of their respective type certification (TC) systems on 29 and 30 November.

Experts from EASA’s Certification Directorate and MOLIT’s Airworthiness Division started the workshop by explaining their certification regulatory framework. Product certification eligibility and capability in the EU, and type certification and product certification in ROK were further presented on in-depth. On the second day of the event, EASA presented its Design Organisation Approval (DOA) concept as well as its certification process principles. A final presentation on ROK’s certification process principles of TC validation was delivered by the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST).

The workshop marked a good first exchange between the civil aviation authorities of the EU and ROK on airworthiness, having provided the representatives with a useful overview of the respective TC systems and regulation. In conclusion, interest was expressed for continued learning and insights sharing on some of the specific topics presented. The EU-ROK APP will support the oranisation of future exchange events addressing these topics of common interest.
