Workshop on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)
7 - 8 November 2024
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) will play a key role in meeting the internationally agreed goal to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions for international aviation by 2050. International exchange of best practices for policy support and a collaborative approach to identify and reinforce partnerships aim to stimulate the uptake of SAF globally. On 7 and 8 November, the stakeholders from across the aviation communities in Europe and the Republic of Korea (ROK) convened online to update each other on the state of play.
Over the course of these two days, the workshop provided the over 80 participants with an overview of policy development and current regulatory approaches in ROK and the EU, as presented by the ROK’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), the European Commission’s Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the French civil aviation authority (DGAC). Key Korean and European industry players, S-OIL, Hanwha TotalEnergies, Neste, Air France, Korean Air, and Brussels Airport Company, shared their views of the SAF production and supply development and challenges. Finally, technical aspects including safety and sustainability certification were discussed by EASA, Airbus, and the Korea Petroleum Quality & Distribution Authority (K-Petro).
This workshop was organised by the EU-ROK Aviation Partnership Project (APP), EASA and MOLIT’s cooperation framework established in 2021. This platform has facilitated expert exchanges on multiple important aviation domains, and it was emphasised during the workshop by the authority representatives that sustainable aviation in general and SAF in particular remain essential subjects to continue exchanges and cooperation for in the future, for European and Korean aviation players to stay abreast of each other’s best practices in policy and industry schemes.
