Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) was the topic of focus of the first cooperation activity under the EU-ROK Aviation Partnership Project (APP) in the environmental sustainability domain. A two-day workshop was held online, including participation with presentations of the European Commission, the Republic of Korea’s (ROK) Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), EASA, the Korea Petroleum Quality and Distribution Authority (KPQDA), International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC), Neste, Airbus, Safran, Finnair and Korean Air. With further participation of other authorities and industry stakeholders, over fifty representatives were in attendance.

The purpose of the workshop was to establish a common understanding of SAF and share insights of opportunities and challenges for large scale deployment. On the first day, the authorities started the programme with giving participants and overview of the current SAF regulatory framework, developments and status in the EU and ROK, and SAF approval and Clearing House. On the second day, industry partners contributed their expertise covering topics such as SAF sustainability certification, SAF production outlook, view of the aircraft, engine and equipment OEM, and view of the airline.

Incentivised use of SAF is one of the most promising measures to achieve carbon reduction, and this workshop served as a platform for stakeholders from the EU and ROK to start exchanges between the two regions on this subject. Following the event, many participants expressed interest to continue discussing SAF and related subtopics in more detail in the future.
